Dr. Mudunov is one of the leading experts in the treatment of head and neck tumors in Russia. He participates in multiple international, national, and regional conferences, and schools dedicated to the treatment of head and neck cancers. He supervises scientific work of PhD students.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Development of high-tech surgeries for oral tumors; transoral organ-sparing surgeries for oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancers; endolaryngeal organ-sparing surgeries for laryngeal cancer using a carbon dioxide laser; extended combination surgeries for skull base tumors and craniofacial tumors; surgeries for malignant tumors affecting the outer and middle ear, pyramid of the temporal bone, and infratemporal fossa (lateral portion of the skull base); reconstructive surgery for patients with head and neck cancers; endonasal surgery for tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses with the involvement of the anterior skull base (FESS-surgery), surgery for thyroid cancer, etc.

EDUCATION

1998: graduated from Kabardino-Balkar State University (Faculty of General Medicine).

1998–2000: clinical resident (surgical oncology) in the Surgical Department of Upper Respiratory Tract and Digestive Tract Tumors, N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center, Russian Academy of Medical Science.

2002: defended his thesis entitled ‘Comparing the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in comprehensive and combination treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the oral and oropharyngeal mucosa.’

2010: defended his doctoral thesis entitled ‘Skull base tumors. Clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment.’

2013: specialization in endonasal surgery and endoscopic skull base surgery (Leipzig, Germany).

2014: specialization in transoral laser microsurgery for malignant tumors of the upper respiratory and digestive tract (Phoenix, Arizona, USA).

2015: specialization in skull base surgery in the European Institute of TeleSurgery (Strasbourg, France).

Dr. Mudunov also underwent specialization in laser surgery of tumors of the larynx, oral cavity, and oropharynx (Marburg, Germany).

CAREER

2000–2007; surgical oncologist in the Department of Upper Respiratory Tract and Digestive Tract Tumors, N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center, Russian Academy of Medical Science.

2007–2013: senior and then leading research fellow in the same department.

Since 2013: head of the Surgical Department of Head and Neck Tumors in N.N. Trapeznikov Research Institute of Clinical Oncology, N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center, Ministry of Health of Russia.

PUBLICATIONS

Dr. Mudunov has coauthored more than 125 research articles published in both Russian and foreign journals and 3 monographs.

MEMBERSHIP IN PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS

Member of the European Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, international working group on studying head and neck tumors and development of treatment strategies for them (the group includes experts from N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center and Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden), working group for the development of national clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant head and neck tumors.
